Earth Day Reflections on Water – Earth Island Journal

1 min read

At this river in the western part of the Brooks Range, I find myself appreciating the availability of clean and pure water, a resource that is not easily accessible for many. I am able to casually fill my bottle with water from the river without any concerns or the need for filtration. As a guide for arctic float trips, I sometimes drink directly from the river, experiencing its extremely cold temperature and its crystal-clear appearance as it flows over gravel beds and reflects the surrounding landscape. The water creates various formations as it moves, occasionally forming riffles or rapids.
